Joining us here at Harlow Squadron could not be easier whether you want to join as a member of staff or as a cadet its still very simple as we parade on Monday and Friday evenings between 7pm and 9:30pm. All you need to do is come up one night and find someone to show you the Main Office, all our cadets and staff will be happy to help and show you the way. Once in the office you will simply just need to let the staff know what your intentions are and they will talk you through the rest.
When coming to us and wanting to join as a cadet there are a few requirments; First of all, cadets must be a minimum of 13 for insurance purposes, Secondly we will require a few forms to be filled out and signed by parents as consent for taking part in our activities such as flying, gliding and shooting. These forms can either be filled out on the night if you bring parents with you or can be taken home and brought back up at another time after you have seen the squadron in action.
If you wish to join our squadron as a member of staff then it too has some requirements, namely that you must be of at least 20 years of age and have enthusiasm to work with children within a military environment. As you are working with children you will also have to be CRB checked, there are multiple different pathways when joining as staff in the ATC the first being a CI or Civilian Instructor, in this role you will not be a uniformed member of staff but are just as vital in the running of our squadron. A CI will undertake tasks such as teaching cadets helping to run exercises and plan activities for cadets. The next role would be as an Adult NCO, in this role while you aren't a commisioned RAF officer you are uniformed and will undertake the same tasks as some CI's while you will also be responsable for discipline and uniform standards within the squadron. finally the Officer pathway this process is a bit longer and requires a lot more paperwork but at the end of it you are a fully commissioned member of the RAF Volunteer Reserves.
